Fall Is Asking Us to Slow Down. Why Do We Keep Speeding Up?

Vintage-style fall pumpkin field graphic for Octoberest, a virtual sound bath promotion from Sixth & Twelfth Sound.

Fall naturally signals a shift in pace. The days get shorter, the air cools down, and everything around us starts to pull inward a little.

Modern life, of course, tends to do the opposite.

Work gets busier. School is back in full swing. Calendars start filling with events, travel, deadlines and holiday plans. We try to squeeze in everything we love about fall while also keeping up with everything we already have to do.

It’s a little backwards. The season around us is slowing down while most of us are speeding up.

We probably aren’t going to change that reality anytime soon, but we can make small choices that help us work with the season instead of fighting against it.

That’s the idea behind Octoberest.

Making rest intentional

Most people aren’t bad at resting because they don’t understand the concept. The problem is that rest usually gets whatever time is left after everything else is handled.

That system rarely works very well.

There’s almost always another email to answer, another errand to run, another project to finish or another thing we could be doing with an open hour. When rest is left until the end of the list, it’s easy for it to disappear completely.

Intentional rest works differently because the time is protected before the week gets away from you.

For October, I wanted to create a simple way to do that without asking people to overhaul their schedules or adopt another complicated wellness routine.

Octoberest gives you four hours of intentional rest during the month through Grounded Rebel, my virtual sound bath membership.

We meet live on Zoom every Wednesday at 7:00 PM Central for about an hour. Your camera stays off, you don’t have to talk, and no meditation experience is required.

You just need somewhere comfortable to listen.

Four hours is enough to start

Four hours over the course of an entire month isn’t a dramatic commitment, and that’s part of why I like the idea.

You don’t need to completely redesign your routine to make room for rest. Setting aside one hour each week creates a small, consistent pause without demanding much from your schedule.

During those sessions, there’s nowhere to drive, no parking to deal with and no pressure to socialize. You can stay home, get comfortable, turn the lights down and listen to crystal singing bowls and a gong for an hour.

For a lot of people, the biggest obstacle to wellness isn’t a lack of interest. It’s time, cost or the amount of effort required to participate.

A virtual format helps remove some of those barriers.

Making sound baths more affordable

Grounded Rebel was created because I wanted regular sound bath experiences to feel more accessible financially.

Attending an in-person sound bath every week can add up quickly, especially when each session requires a separate ticket. Add in travel time and the commitment becomes harder to maintain for a lot of people.

Octoberest is designed to lower that barrier.

For $5, you receive your first month of Grounded Rebel, which includes four live virtual sound baths during October plus access to the replay library.

Yes, it costs less than a pumpkin spice latte.

The point isn’t that five dollars is magical. The point is that the investment is intentionally small while still giving you four separate opportunities to protect an hour of your week.

That feels much more realistic to me than asking people to spend a lot of money just to experiment with slowing down.

What happens during a virtual sound bath?

A sound bath is a listening experience built around sustained tones, resonance, repetition, vibration and quiet.

During Grounded Rebel sessions, I use crystal singing bowls and a gong while participants listen from home. You can lie down, sit on the couch, use headphones if you prefer or simply make yourself comfortable in whatever way works for you.

There’s no correct way to experience a sound bath.

You don’t need to force your mind to become quiet, focus perfectly or have a particular emotional response. The session is simply a period of time where nothing is being asked of you beyond listening.

That simplicity is one of the reasons I like this format so much.

Rest doesn’t need to wait until winter

Fall has a way of making us postpone rest. We tell ourselves we’ll slow down when work eases up, after Halloween, once Thanksgiving is over or when the holidays finally pass. By then, we’ve spent an entire season pushing through the very time of year that naturally invites us to slow down.

Most of us can’t step away from work, family, social plans and everything else modern life requires just because the days are getting shorter. We can, however, make small amounts of rest intentional instead of waiting for an empty calendar that may never come.

That’s the thinking behind Octoberest.

One protected hour each week isn’t a dramatic lifestyle change. It’s simply four hours during the month that have already been set aside for you to get comfortable, listen and stop doing for a while.

A low investment in a quieter October

Wellness doesn’t always need to be expensive, complicated or time consuming.

Sometimes the most useful thing you can do is create a small amount of space and protect it.

Octoberest is four hours across one month. That’s all.

For $5, you can try Grounded Rebel, attend the live sessions, listen to the replays and see whether having a regular hour of intentional rest fits into your life.

If it does, great. If it doesn’t, you’ve still given yourself four chances to slow down during one of the busiest seasons of the year.

Join Octoberest

Octoberest includes four live virtual sound baths through Grounded Rebel during the month of October.

Sessions are held Wednesdays at 7:00 PM Central on Zoom. Cameras stay off, no group discussion is required and you don’t need any previous meditation or sound bath experience.

Your first month is $5 with code OCTOBEREST. After the promotional month, Grounded Rebel continues at the regular membership rate of $22 per month, and you can cancel anytime.

If fall is already starting to feel full, this is one small way to make sure rest has a place on the calendar too.
